May Course Work

Members are reminded that Recovery treatment of greens will commence this week, weather permitting. Also, turf work at the first tee will commence soon, followed by turf work at the 14th green.

Rebuilding the bunker at the 6th green and associated turf work will commence next week.

Finally, scrub to the right of the 7th fairway will be cleared.

Proposed Coursework March 2013

Greens staff will be working on the undernoted areas in March:

Bushes are being cleared from the right hand side of the first. For safety reasons, play will commence from the 10^th tee during week days until this work is completed.

The bunker at the 11th green should be completed this week.

The path from 6^th tee along by the pond will be replaced..

Bunkers at the RHS 3rd and LHS 6^th will be repaired. There is also a bit of turf work to do around the 6th bunker.

It is hoped to repair a second path by the end of the month.

At the end of March/beginning of April, staff will tine and over-seed fescue depending on the weather.

Granular fertiliser including Iron to continue to combat moss will also be applied at some point.

Following the success of the recent Michael Buble Tribute Night, when a packed club enjoyed some fabulous music, we have great pleasure in announcing that Scotscraig Golf Club is hosting a Tom Jones Tribute Night performed by the brilliant performer Ian Anthony – who is described as being as “Good as it Gets”

The event will take place at 7pm on Saturday 23^rd February 2013 and tickets costing £16 will be on sale from the clubhouse on a first come first served basis from the 3^rd January.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great night of entertainment and members are asked to purchase their tickets early to avoid disappointment.

BDL confirmed that there will be a lunch in January for members of 50 years service. The Captain, Vice Captain and Managing Secretary will attend.

   GS reported that the Club received a VAT inspection recently and that it went very well.

   BDL reported that the annual subscriptions will be sent out earlier this year i.e. 2^nd week in December.

   CG advised that notification of winter works on the golf course will be notified on a monthly basis   through email, notices and web site.

BDL reported that an advert marketing membership will be published this week.

AK reported that a Quiz and Putting Competition has been arranged for Friday 30^th November. Email to be sent to members.

BDL to assess On Line entries for Gents competitions and Open Tournaments.

It was agreed that Ladies can play in the Texas Scramble Open Tournament.

Held in the clubhouse on Monday 17^th September 2012

BDL reported that visitors’ green fee income is ahead of budget and last year as at 31^st August 2012, although visiting parties’ deposits are down. Projection for the year is that visitors’ green fee income will be £2,000 ahead of budget.

The Captain announced M Ritchie’s resignation from Council and as Greens Convener and thanked him for his efforts throughout the year. The Captain also announced the appointment of C Goode as Greens Convener.

BDL reported that 3 members of staff will be attending a Customer Service Workshop at Forfar Golf Club on Wednesday 7^th November.

The Past Captain reported that a Past Captains/Council Dinner will be held in the clubhouse on Friday 5^th October.

The House Convener announced that 76 tickets have been sold for the Michael Buble Tribute evening in the clubhouse.

The Captain advised of the following Motions for approval by Council which will be raised at the AGM.

1..Grading of Youth membership from ages 18 – 29.

2. Introduction of 5 Day Plus membership.

3. Delete from Club Constitution the press advert.

4. Increase in annual subscription by £15 to £570.

Approved.

The Captain advised that a party from Race Brook Golf and Country Club will be visiting Scotscraig on Saturday 27^th April 2013. The cost for members will be approximately £30 pp.

BDL to arrange lunch for members who have 50 years service. The 4 members are: J S Howitt, J R Lindsay, I Mackie and R I Pearce.

Council agreed to issue of £150 Winter Golf Ticket from 1^st November 2012 – 28^th February 2013, Monday – Friday. Times can be booked 5 days in advance. It was also agreed that an incentive of £100 will be offered for membership. This sum will be taken from the price of the Winter Ticket for any new members from this source.

Meeting to be arranged prior to the AGM to discuss membership categories.

The Captain reported on the following finances:

Visitors income is up although Visitors Advance Deposits are down. Overall green fee income is down slightly.

Greens expenditure is over budget in view of cost of road at 14^th. Seeds and fertilizer stock has been used up.

The Captain is to issue a letter for the members regarding the golf course.

Council agreed to “Rescue Treatment” on practice putting green. A decision to be made by Council on possibility of this treatment on the course.

Quote being requested for carpeting of Members’ Bar.

BDL to contact Art of Glass to fix window sills in the lounge.

BDL to arrange meeting with Belhaven to discuss discounts and sponsorship.

Bicentenary meeting arranged for 25^th September.

Confirmation received that tap water at water fountain on 11^th hole is safe to use and drink.

George Pendrich (Course Manager) gave a presentation to Council on Rough Management.

MR reported that a Course walk has been arranged for Monday 9^th July.    He alsoadvised that certain areas on the course will be looked at to re-shape.

GP to enquire with Prison Service regarding employing of offenders for greenkeeping duties. There will be no labour costs.

GP to investigate drainage problems at 7^th and 12^th.

AK asked if walkway at 13^th could be investigated. Noted.

GAL suggested that the white lining should be renewed. Noted.

Wee Course

A Wee course has been prepared on the practice strip which is primarily aimed at junior golfers aged ten and below. It is hoped that our youngest members will develop a sense of ownership with a part of Scotscraig Golf Club that they call their own. All are welcome to play the course but priority times have been allocated for its use. Members using the practice area should avoid making divots on closely mowed areas when not playing the course.

Practice Area Timings

All members are advised that the practice strip will be closed on

Sundays between 4.00 – 5.00pm

and

Thursdays from 6.00 – 8.00pm

Effective from Sunday 17^th June 2012

This is to allow the 4 hole course to be opened for both the juniors and members.

The practice green and short game area will still be available for use.

Please call in to the Pro Shop and advise them if you are using the 4 hole course area and pick up your “Wee Course” score card.

We hope members appreciate and enjoy this further enhancement to the facilities at Scotscraig Golf Club

The Scottish Golf Union advise that the Scottish CDH is now live.

Individual Member Access

Individual members of affiliated golf clubs will only be able to access the CDH once they have been advised of their own unique CDH ID Number.

Individual unique CDH ID Numbers can now be obtained from the office.

Once a member receives his/her own CDH ID Number they can access and register on the CDH at: www.scottishgolf.org/go/cdh_members.

The individual CDH Guidance Pack in the Related Documents section provides details of how individual golf club members can register on the CDH and view their own handicap and full player handicap record.

Benefits to Individual Golfers

1. Golfers will have access to view their Exact and Playing Handicaps on-line via the SGU and SLGA websites and confirm when their Handicap was last updated on the CDH.

2. Golfers will also have access to view their Playing Handicap Record with all competition results recorded allowing individuals to fulfil their individual handicapping responsibilities.

3. I Mac reported that the Club’s presence at the Golf Show was profitable with approximately 900 E Mail addresses being obtained for the Club’s Data Base. Two visitors’ reservations were also accepted together with one potential new member.

4. I Mac and BDL to meet with the Dundee Chamber of Commerce to consider membership.

5. DF reported that a Rules Night is being held in the clubhouse for the Ladies’ Section on 25^th April. Cost will be £5 to include a meal.

6. BDL to arrange for the Bicentenary Committee to meet as soon as possible.

7. Approval that No1 edition of the 25 Year Old Bicentenary Whisky be auctioned/raffled to raise funds.

8. MR to arrange for suitable signage to be place at the practice area.

1. BDL reported that there are currently 500 Full Members after recent resignations and intake.

2. BDL to send reminder to all members in March advising them that they can now pay next years annual subscriptions in advance on to their Loyalty Card.

3. BDL confirmed that the Auditors have confirmed that the cost of the matting on the course can be Capitalised.

4. List of competitions for consecutive Saturdays and Sundays has been passed to the Course Manager. This is to ensure that pin positions will be changed for the Sunday competition.

5. Volunteers to be requested for a course tidying up exercise on 17^th April.

6. Moss on greens to be treated. The Course Manager advised that the surfaces may be slightly bumpy for a short period.

7. A Hoteliers Day has been arranged for Friday 23^rd March and a New Members Day for Sunday 25^th March.

8. Agreement that Scotscraig should be represented at this years Scottish Golf Show from 30^th March – 1^st April at a cost of £250.

9. BDL to arrange for Wifi to be installed in the clubhouse.

10. Invitation for representative of Scotscraig to attend centenary celebration of Race Brook Country Club, Connetticut, USA on Saturday 11^th August.

11. Agreement that Scotscraig Golf Club should join the Association of James Braid Courses. This entitles members to play other members’ courses at heavily discounted green fees.

There are over 200 member clubs from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England and one in New York.

MEMBERS’ INCENTIVE SCHEME

In the current climate, golf clubs are finding it very difficult to retain their membership and most clubs now have no Waiting List. Scotscraig is no different. Scotscraig has no Waiting List and the Full Membership is currently 80 Membersshort of the maximum permitted in accordance with Clause 3. of the Club’s Constitution. Members are reminded that there is an Incentive Scheme currently in place and Council would like to encourage members to participate.

With effect from Friday 1^st April 2011 any Member (i.e. The Proposer), who introduces a new Member to Scotscraig Golf Club will receive the amount of £25.00 credited to his/her Loyalty Card.

MEMBERS SHOULD NOTE THAT PROPOSERS AND SECONDERS FOR MEMBERSHIP MUST BE A MEMBER OF SCOTSCRAIG FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS IN ACCORDANCE WITH CLAUSE 9. OF THE CLUB’S CONSTITUTION.

Members should also note that there is a section on the Club’s Web Site relating to Membership, and Application forms can also be downloaded from the Web Site.

There is currently still an Entry Fee of £500 but Council have approved that this can now be paid up over a period of 10 years at a minimum of £50 per annum.

4th Hole Development Plan

Scotscraig 4^th Hole Development Plan

The second half of the 4^th hole has some areas that cause problems to both golf and course management, which are outlined below:

1. The walkways at the end of the fairway are poorly defined and range from thin turf to being totally overgrown.

2. The walkway to the left of the green is constantly worn and impossible to maintain turf in desirable condition.

3. The area to the right of the green was severely penal with bushes growing up to and over the semi-rough. This left little or no option to drop within the rules of golf other than, at times to go to the second tee.

4. The left edge of the green is dominated by poa annua and permanently stressed due to heavy traffic as it is virtually the only route taken onto the green.

5. The turf on the rear tier of the green is dominated by poa annua and weak due to tree root invasion.

Actions that would alleviate these issues:

1. Clearing the gorse and broom at the end of the fairway and create 3 or 4 defined walkways to the approach.

2. Widen the walkway to the left of the green to allow improved traffic and turf management.

3. Clear the area between the 4^th green and the 2^nd tee and maintain it as grassland.

4. Create a walkable route to the right of the green to enable improved traffic management and allow for more traffic to enter the green from the right.

5. Carry out a root prune to the rear of the green to prevent the trees from drawing important moisture and nutrients and causing turf stress.

Summary

The 4^th is a feature hole at Scotscraig Golf Club and, like others here, has become overgrown with a lot of the attraction being lost. The 4 actions above will enhance the playing of the hole without detracting from the challenge in playing it. The changes will also improve the ability to manage it and allow staff to raise the quality of turf surfaces in this area of the course.

Changes implemented so far:

During 2009/11 the actions detailed below were carried out with varying success.

1. The area to the left of the green has had several attempts to re-turf it and plug gaps in the turf. Although slight improvement has been made it still remains an area of weak turf due to traffic stress.

2. The main route to the approach has been re-turfed but remains weak as there are few options to use an alternative route.

3. The area to the right of the 4^th green has been cleared prior to reinstating the area and maintaining it as grassland.

4. The area to the right of the approach has had bushes cleared and this will continue across the area at the end of the fairway.

5. A root prune was carried out, cutting the roots of all trees to the rear of the green. This will ensure over-seeding is more successful in establishing stronger turf to the rear of the green.

Future work to be completed 2012/13:

1. The area to the right will be reshaped with a walkable route onto the right hand side of the green and round the rear of the green. The whole area will as much as possible be reshaped to allow a tractor/rough mower combination to travel across the ground, enabling rough grass management in line with other areas of the course.

2. The routes from the fairway to the approach will be shaped and turfed to provide better walkways.

3. The bank to the left of the green will have the bushes removed and the ground moved into the hollow to the left of the approach. This will have the effect of widening the walkway to the left of the green and enable improved turf and traffic management.

As with the 16^th hole this work will be done on a staged basis to enable other work to be done across the course and allow one area to recover before another is opened up. Following the main work this winter the area to the right of the green will take most of 2012 to re-establish as grassland.

We look forward to returning this golf hole to its former glory and ensuring it is sustainable into the future.

Bicentenary Whisky

Members are advised that orders are now being accepted for the Club's Bicentenary Whisky. There are two blends available for sale: 1. 15 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, and 2. 25 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Orders are now being accepted at the Bar - 15 Year Old (£35 per bottle) and 25 Year Old (£65 per bottle). Members purchasing by Loyalty Card will receive the normal Loyalty Bonus of 10% discount on the above prices.

ROADWAY AT THE 14^TH

Members and visitors are advised that work on the road across the 14^th fairway will commence on Monday 12^th March. This work will take approximately 5 days. In view of this, the 14^th hole will be played as a Par 3 from a tee on the far side of the ditch. Play will be to the normal green. Players will therefore have to walk from the 13^th green to the temporary tee past the ditch.
